Provo River

8" x 8", acrylic on block

About 40 minutes to the east of our home is the incredibly scenic Heber Valley. The Provo River meanders through the valley and is known as a fly fisherman's dream. The river is lined with willows, which at this time of the year are a beautiful shade of alizarin crimson.

Jordan River at 3900 South

12" x 12", oil on canvas

The Jordan river meanders from Utah Lake, through the residential city blocks of Salt Lake City, to it's end in the Great Salt Lake. For the perfect painting op, I frequent the bike trail that travels along the river amidst abundant wildlife.

Autumn Anemones

6" x 6", oil

Also called Japanese Autumn Anemones, these are one of my favorite garden flowers because after all the other flowers have faded in the fall, these come into full bloom. We grew both the pink and the white in our garden in Michigan. I recently found a bed of white anemones at the Sugarhouse Library that had just finished their bloom.

A more abstracted painting of soft gray skies with mist over the hills.

Flash Flood Warning, St. George, Utah

Travelling through Southern Utah this summer, we experienced dramatic skies and red earth through the desert. The thunderstorms are beautiful but can be dangerous if caught in an arroyo - even at quite a distance away.

Sugarhouse Park

36" x 80", acrylic on canvas

I still find it hard to believe that this is the view from Sugarhouse Park just one mile from our home.

Wasatch Morning

We take walks early in the morning just up the street from our house and as soon as we get to the top of the hill you are greeted with this view and you have to just stop and say WOW.

Mountain Meadow

Many of the hikes here in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah open up to meadows like this which are the headwaters of the streams. I've just picked up a book called '60 Hikes Within 60 Miles' of Salt Lake City. Here it is the middle of November and it was 60 degrees today with lots of sun. Looks like the hiking season lasts quite a while out here:)

Details

The Evergreen Gallery is having a small works show on Friday, Nov. 21, so I kinda got carried away and created 20 2"x3" mini paintings. They look nice in the small ceramic frames I found.

Santa Ynez Valley Clouds

We were in the Santa Ynez Valley of California recently and seeing the fog roll in over the hills brought back memories of when we used to live there in Los Olivos.

Canyon Maples

Up on the mountain side in late autumn the Canyon or Bigtooth Maples turn a beautiful shade of burnt sienna red. They a quite hardy and drought tolerant and make very nice landscape trees down here on the flats.

Field Study 36, Southern Utah

Southern Utah glows with warmth especially in the early mornings or as the sun is setting.

First Snowfall

The cold front which passed through today left a dusting of snow in the higher elevations.

Changing Seasons

Our beautiful fall ended today with a cold front passing through and with it snow in the mountians. The aspens and scrub oaks put on a beautiful display over the last few weeks.

Hiking up Mill Creek Canyon

This was the view across the canyon while I was hiking the other morning. The sun was just coming over the ridge and popping the trees out of deep shadow into brilliant illumination. Not yet being acclimated to the altitude I found myself stopping to get some air quite often:) That wouldn't have been so bad except a gentleman about seventy came jogging past me wishing me a "Good Morning". Me thinks I need to get out more often.

Field Study 33, Outside Springville

I submitted a piece of artwork to the Springville Museum of Art (accepted) about one hour south of here. You get a glimps of the village set up against the mountians as you get closer.

Aspens, Mill Creek Canyon, Utah

We took a drive a couple of weeks ago and hard to believe that only about 10 minutes from our home is a beautiful canyon called Mill Creek. I just discovered yesterday a historical marker in the Salt Lake City suburb of Mill Creek for the flour mill after which the creek and canyon was named.

Field Study 28, Evening Drama

I love painting dramatic skies and living here in Utah we get plenty of them. I'm embarking on producing small accent painting on a daily basis and posting them on ebay. I've sold a lot of these through my galleries and posting them on ebay is fun. This painting would make a nice accent with it's rich colors.
