Looking east from Sugarhouse park to what's called the benches then on to Parleys Canyon.

As you leave highway 80 heading toward Park City you pass a rather open plain before you enter the town formerly known for it's silver mines but today for the skiing gold on the surface.

The fleeting season of fall in the Utah mountains is a beautiful site although so brief.

Midway

Just over the front range to the east of us is the Heber Valley with beautiful views in every direction. The quaint town of Midway nestles on the eastern side of the valley.
I hiked above Emigration Canyon to the ridge overlooking the Salt Lake Valley. The terrain was aglow as the canyon maples and rabbit bush were changing color.
After a short hike through beautiful wildflower meadows we came upon this small lake called Cecret Lake. From what I've been told the silver miners who used to mine in this area named the lake but weren't the best spellers.
This is the canyon just to the east of Salt Lake City through which the Mormon pioneers came. There is an interesting plaque near the bottom of the gap that says the Donner Party almost made through here but decided the mouth of the canyon was too difficult so they hauled their wagons up over the hill just to the right. Seems they were destined for difficulty. The Mormons were able to punch through the last portion in about four hours after which they encountered prairie grass so high they could hardly pass through, but it gave great grazing for their cattle.
For the past week we have been getting these wonderful thunderstorms coming up from the south. Each afternoon as the temperature rises the cumulus clouds build and the rain begins to fall but often evaporates before it hits the ground, called virga.
This is a large painting of a small canyon next to the Little Cottonwood canyon here on the edge of Salt Lake City. It has a hiking trail right up the middle but the challenge is finding the trail head behind the residential area.
After delivering paintings to the Springville Art Museum I took a drive just to the east of the village. The terrrain quickly changes as you enter a canyon with a beautiful creek flowing through the underbrush called Hobble Creek.
We spent an afternoon about an hour north of here in the Ogden Valley earlier this week. The scenery is majestic with mountians all around and creeks flowing throughout the valley. I find it amazing to have such beauty so close at hand.
We took a drive through Park City and on to the village of Kamas. Just to the east, the road enters the Wasatch-Cache National Forest and follows this beautiful creek glowing with winter willows.
